Highlighting text is a great opportunity for students to practice analysis and synthesis during metacognitive processes. Providing a classroom set of highlighters and bean bag chairs will make the learning environment more comfortable and less sterile. Students will greatly benefit from practicing these skills during learning stations and sharing knowledge with their peers during collaborative instruction. Students will also utilize the classroom set of highlighters during literacy, vocabulary, and writing instruction, specifically peer editing. Students will use specific colored highlighters to identify errors in mechanics, usage, and grammar and make corrections to those errors as they navigate the English language arts curriculum.
