I am an art teacher that teaches AP Art and Design, Art II 2D Design and Art I. Students are amazing and love making art. My students are from an urban at risk community. Many are 1st gen immigrants whose parents did not go to college. They struggle with poverty, language barriers, and the issues that face our urban communities. I teach by choosing topics that directly relate to their lives. My students are encouraged to tell their own story through visual art. past topics i have explored with students are: incarceration, foster care, human trafficking and this years topic of surviving vs. resilience. Students work on a specific topic all year doing research, writing poetry and creating art relating to the topics explored. They create works based on the enduring understanding of how the topic relates to their own community and ultimately to themselves. It is the hope that they will learn to become resilient too.
