This class set of the book, The Hate U Give, would be an integral part of a unit addressing literatures role in race relations for our ethnic literature class. While the school has many text sets that address race in the civil rights era, students need access to literature to that is modern and relevant to their current experience. The text set will be an anchor for the studies of other major pieces of literature from the past fifty years in America that relate to the study of race in literature. It is crucial to the development of reading comprehension for students to be exposed to culturally relevant texts. This text set will behave as a bridge to canonized pieces of literature that will enrich the knowledge and skill set of all students. The requested novel itself exposes students to figurative language, character development, the complexities of vernacular and identity and will sync up with informational texts that are current and relevant to the national discussion occurring around race.
