Research has shown that hungry children don't learn, for multiple reasons: low food security can lead to toxic stress; lack of access to healthy food can lead to malnutrition; and hunger is associated with depression and anxiety in children. Stress, malnutrition, depression and anxiety create students who are unable to motivate themselves, stay awake in class, and, ultimately, perform academically and socially. My solution is to give low income students access to healthy snacks in order to improve their achievement. Low income students show lower academic performance across the country, and particularly in my school building. These students deserve to have access to the same resources as their peers so they can equitably achieve.
