I am requesting a color printer. Imagine if the history of man was all in gray-scale. This is the current situation in my class. After establishing the historical narrative of each culture with my students, I assign a project that will allow them to explore further a topic of their choosing: for the Paleolithic, they created a poster of their favorite hominid which highlighted favorite tools and other associated artifacts. For Egypt, the students will be creating grave goods, and posters of grave goods, for our resident mummy. But when it comes time for the students to create their posters or presentations, all of their images are in gray-scale. That is the current situation in my classroom because we do not have access to a color printer. Nor do many of my students have access to a color printer at home (if they have a printer at all). Such an addition would breathe life into the brilliant ideas and connections made by my students to the curriculum every day. The laptop I'm also requesting would have a dual purpose: Firstly, it would be a resource for students to find images for their projects. While we have access to Chromebooks, most of class time is devoted to writing (which can be completed in the computer lab). With a laptop (and a color printer), the final task of any student project can be completed in my class. Secondly, my digital projector currently connects to my desktop for all of my power point presentations. This requires cables stretching across my classroom (an obvious hazard). An independent laptop would free me from the use of my desktop.
