I have many Hmong students in my classes due to large number that immigrated to Wisconsin after the Vietnam War. Many of these families were sponsored by local churches and civic organizations. I teach 8th grade language arts and have found that one way to connect literacy to these students, many of whom have difficulty with English, is through manga novels. These are Japanese books that feature characters and settings that feel familiar to my students. It is important for young people to see themselves in the books they read. Research has shown that when students can identify with the main characters in the books they read, they will push through the book, even if it is at a higher reading level. My goal for these students is to get them as close to grade level as possible. Thank you!
