For our Character Studies reading unit, we will read Because of Winn-Dixie. As we meet new characters and progress through the book, students will study character traits, make personal connections, track events on a story mountain, and learn how characters can change. When we finish, my students would enjoy celebrating with a party (similar to the book storyline) that focuses on character and theme. Students will get to adopt a stuffed puppy just like the main character in the book does and be able to list the character traits of their new pet. Adding in items like a notebook, pencil and eraser will encourage my students to use their new reading strategies for future books they read.
