These are basically academic book clubs that foster critical thinking and a love for literature. My honors freshmen work and read in a four-person literature circle throughout the year in eight-week cycles. Unfortunately, my honors students have loved a few books that are not provided by our school library and have had a tough time accessing the books that they need to read at home and use for their literature circle projects. I The goal of this project is to show students how adults who love reading tend to read in real life--by selecting books of their choice and sharing them (and a few life lessons) with friends. I regularly receive feedback that these are the most impactful reading experiences that my freshmen have had in years! They often go on to explore the authors that they discover through these projects and go on reading throughout winter and summer break. Low-income students are often unintentionally left to flounder in higher-level academic courses because they cannot afford to purchase supplementary class materials that enrich their learning. Please help me to make sure that my kids don't become just another statistic. My kids voted on the literature circle books that they have loved most this year so that I could request class copies of them. Please help me to show them that their voice can be heard and that their experiences matter.
