My students are in 2nd and 3rd grade. The club is offered for 2 sessions with 6 classes per session. The children come from a variety of backgrounds. In my school I teach a lot of children that require ELL services. Many of the students also have a free or reduced breakfast and lunch card. The school is a very warm and welcoming place which helps families come for help when they need it. Many times students or parents want to help, but they don't know how or even shy away from teachers since they don't know the language that well. Having so many cultures, I try to bring a variety of foods to the club. In the past the children have made fresh pasta, crab rangoon, butter spritz cookies, salad dressings, coconut shrimp with a mango salsa, and the favorite, chocolate and fruit sauce day over ice cream. The kids love to get their hands dirty and experience what they might have never done at home.
