We work in small groups daily in my classroom. I would use the requested books in reading groups in order to create a book study among the students. I have chosen books based on the lexile levels so they can match the lexile levels of the students in my cooperative groups. The books I wish to use are: The One and Only Ivan, Sideways Stories from Wayside, and A Wrinkle in Time. Weekly, students will read their books independently, fill out a reading log, and meet with their groups to discuss what they have read. I have also chosen tools to help students excel on writing this year through practice and staying organized. The "Just Write! Grade 3 Skills Book" is a wonderful tool that will help students learn the writing process. We have a writing block each day in which these work books will be used. Writing is so important and I want my students to have a love for it!
I feel that inviting students to socialize around reading will cultivate a love for it. I want to encourage classroom discussion and conversation.
I want students to make connections between reading and other issues through writing.
