With an increasing number of students who benefit from the use of sensory tools to help them focus and attend to their learning, there is a need for resources within the classroom. These resources include flexible seating and sensory options, such as lap desks, wobble stools, wobble cushions, kick bands, and fidgets. These resources benefit students in many ways. Here are some benefits: • Increase focus and attention span • Relieve stress and anxiety • Reduce excess energy while allowing attention to the task at hand • Relieve frustration – allowing students to achieve a relaxed, contemplative, even mindful state • Allows control of stimulation to a level just right for them • Allows movement and change in a controlled environment. I have seen firsthand the benefits of incorporating sensory options in the classroom. The use of wobble stools, kick bands, cushions and other sensory opportunities have been successful. Another flexible seating option for students could be lap desks. All of the current flexible seats that I have in my classroom are limited to use at a table or desk. Lap desks provide an alternate seat on the floor. Limited resources make it difficult to provide all of these options for all students that need them. These lap desks would allow me to provide a greater number of students with selective seating options to achieve success in the classroom.
