I am in the process of redesigning my library media center into an atmosphere and environment of 21st century and beyond learning spaces for my middle school students. I am trying to encourage STEM activities by creating makerspace areas in the library media center. LEGO is a great starting place. I want an assortment of activities. The first simple machines set I chose is for exploring design engineering with more advanced mechanisms, structures, and forces. It contains elements for creating a broad range of models that cover concepts such as forces and motion, measuring, energy and structure, and will be a perfect starter activity for my students. The WeDo 2.0 Core Set is based upon the latest science standards and was created to enhance students' curiosity and science skills. WeDo 2.0 Curriculum Pack covers life, physical, Earth, and space sciences, as well as engineering. The last set contains a brick assortment that includes gears, wheels and axles, levers, and pulleys. It will engage students in investigating and understanding the operation of simple and compound machines found in everyday life. My students will be able to explore and start engaging in makerspace STEM learning through LEGO.
