This year, our seventh and eight grade students have developed a passion for learning Earth's place in the universe. To help engage our students in understanding the Milky Way Galaxy, we would like to have the witness just how small we are in our enormous universe! We would love to be able to take our students to the impressive Planetarium at the SC State Museum in Columbia to bring their learning to life. Although our students have been to local museums, the planetarium would give our students the opportunity to feel like they are in SPACE! The solar system will literally come alive for them! After the exhibit, we will be able to have a scientific debate on claims that the universe began with a period of extreme and rapid expansion using evidence from the composition of stars and gases and the motion of galaxies in the universe. This is an opportunity that most of our kids would normally not get. The transportation of this trip will not only be a great reward for their hard work, but also a way to continue their obedience in science and math. We hope this authentic experience will instill the love of STEM in our students for a lifetime.
