Our 5th grade students will attend an outdoor science camp in the Santa Cruz Mountains this year. Many students in my class rarely have the opportunity to leave their East Oakland neighborhood, much less get an opportunity to learn science in one of the most beautiful backdrops in the Bay Area. Last year, this camp provided students a glimpse at the possibilities that education can bring. They had lessons in astronomy, health, life sciences, ecology, and environmental protection. Every day was full of meaning and productiveness. It was the ideal culminating experience for their time in elementary school. I hope this year to be able to give those same memories, lessons, and skills to my students this year!
