After 16 years of teaching, the hardest part is still reaching those reluctant readers. After many years, the books in my classroom library are not in good shape. These resources I am requesting, will inspire kids to want to pick up a book, transport them to a new world, and instill a love of reading that they will have for the rest of their lives. My students have a variety of academic needs, interests, and home lives; these resources are designed to reach each one of them. Two little girls in my class have been taken out of their homes due to active child services cases. They LOVE Disney and I'm hoping to put them in a book club together where they can escape reality while still working on the standards of character, point of view, and summarizing. Max and Youssef have active imaginations and will dive right into the Superhero chapter books while I teach them the character, understanding unfamiliar vocabulary, and summarizing standards. Peter is obsessed with learning about history, but we can't read nonfiction ALL the time! The I Survived series is historical fiction, so I can attack the literature standards, while he also gets to learn a little history. The third grade standards are difficult enough. With books that the children are able to dive into, makes the job of teaching these standards so much easier and enjoyable.
