My students are a group of children who crave a good story, but are not easily motivated by black blocks of text on white paper. They say "a picture is worth a thousand words," and I couldn't agree more. My students look forward to having a more colorful and lively reading experience. The addition of these books will provide not only another genre into their library, but motivate my students to read. If stories that look pretty or cool get my kids excited to pick up a book, then I must move forward with my teaching by keeping their needs in mind. Graphic novels are rapidly increasing in popularity among pre-teens and teens. Our students are growing up in an era where creative visual media attracts their attention more than static and plain text. These books were suggested to me by my students as titles they’ve expressed looking into! Independent reading time will become more enjoyable if the students see genres that interest them. They’re still getting all the necessary skills that come with reading regular text books, but with the added pleasure and aid of visual imagery.
