"Sit down!" is a common phrase we hear spoken through the hallways, and although the sentiment altogether is good, it is not what every student needs! Students can be successful bouncing in their chair, standing up at their desk, or sitting down with their legs bouncing on a rubber band. I chose these specific products--the bouncy band, the swivel chair, and the desk topper--because of the needs of my students. I am often asking them to stay at their seat, but their seat does not always allow for the best learning environment for them. My sixth graders lost recess coming to the middle school world, and some of them don't even have physical education until the second semester. They need more opportunities to move in the classroom while still being able to internalize a 45-minute lesson. My students do not always have the capacity to learn in a stagnant environment. Students have told me, and I have witnessed, that they need more than I can give them, physically. Some students need to stand to do their work without bending to reach their desk. Some students need to rock while they are participating in direct instruction, without having the chair fall out from under them. Some students need to bounce their foot without making a noise that irritates their neighbor. With these supplies, I will be able to allow the students to focus on the material without having to focus their energy on keeping their body still.
