Our school is a Title 1 school which means that 40% or more of students come from a low income family. Many of my students are coming into Kindergarten that have never been to school before. Students are learning for the first time how to be friends, working together and learning together! We come together a lot during the school day to sit on the carpet and enjoy a good book, work together to build castles and houses with pools out of blocks, have great discussions together about why the character chose to do something or how our friends feel when someone doesn't follow the rules and they get hurt. Our carpet is like the dinner table where everyone comes together and looks forward to being with each other. Our carpet is our meeting place that builds a community of learners. Our carpet now does not have boundary lines for students to have they own space. It is a simple blue rug that I have to put tape marks on for kids to know where to sit. The tape is so hard to get off that it ruins the carpet and makes it so dirty and difficult to change spots as needed. To receive this new rug with spaces for everyone will help my kindergarteners each have a space of their own to sit in and not worry about they neighbor sitting to close to them or someone's foot or hand being in their spot. They know they can comfortable sit and feel safe in their spot to do the best learning they can.
