Building community within our school is very important to us. We believe that the best way to build connecting with one another right where the individual is. This is why everyone at our school (Student and All Staff) will be reading Hey Kiddo, It's a graphic memoir that's currently a finalist for the National Book Award, at the same time. It's a great book for all teens but especially for reluctant or struggling readers as well as readers who really love graphic novels. The subject matter is serious and somewhat dark at times (it's about the author's experiences growing up while his mother was addicted to heroin) but also very hopeful in its message about the power of art to heal, which resonates with lots of kids. From an artistic view but from student who may not have parent struggling with an heroin addiction but other addictions and ways they can cope. Creating a school wide Book Club will enhance the conversation among our students as well as the community. Student will have the freedom to share their thoughts, experience and coping suggesting among their peers as well as our school staff. Having this book club will also, introduce a new love for reading for pure pleasure.
