I strive to provide my students with hands-on activities that help accurately solidify the concepts I teach in my class. An energy unit I teach challenges the students to collaboratively construct a house that minimizes thermal energy loss. After building a house, the students take temperature readings and thermal images of their house. They then analyze their data and make adjustments to their project to minimize the thermal energy that is being lost. The Flir One Thermal Imaging camera attachments will allow my students to accurately investigate heat energy and aid in the analysis of data and redesign of their projects. The students will be able to see the abstract concept of heat through the color imaging of the camera. They will use this information to analyze, think critically about adjustments that need to be made, and redesign their project for retesting. Through this unit the students are engaged in a real-world project that allows them to not only concretely see thermal energy, but follow the steps of design and modeling, as well as challenge the four C's of the 21st Century skills.
