My students need access to books they will be interested in, books they'll love, books they will see themselves in. As a new teacher, I was so fortunate to receive many books from seasoned teachers, reading coaches, and mentors to start my classroom library. However, the books were stuffed in layers of bins on one 4-tiered shelf and in a one box. You guessed it, they've been on that same shelf and box since then. A few students have wandered in that direction, but not many. I often wondered how I could get my students to love reading even more. I've tried putting comfy chairs and a nice rug out to hang out and read at, but no one seemed to bite. This summer, I have been re-inspired by the Read To Me International Conference and SDE National Conference to step up my classroom library game! I took a look at the books I had. Almost all of the books were browning and most of them worn down and fallen apart from all the reading in previous years of its lifetime. Unfortunately, some were even eaten by termites. Old books can still be good books, but our classroom library needs a makeover! Just a quick glance at a brand new book could entice one's interest to take a second look. I hope that they are caught simply by the title or maybe the illustrations on the cover page. Then, crossing my fingers, students may even read the summary! These simple steps could be so much more promising if our classroom library had books of eye-catching colors, riveting titles, and fresh pages. With the purchase of these books, students will be able to dive into independent reading, guided reading activities and small group instruction with each individual student in mind.
