Children with autism face daily challenges in the form of social and emotional skills, motor development, as well as speech and nonverbal communication. However, this should not limit their ability to learn. One just has to find a way to tend to each individuals needs. I have the opportunity to begin a brand new autism program in January. The classroom is a blank slate and a variety of sensory and developmental learning materials are needed in order to best serve these amazing students. Trampolines, wobble stools, and Hippity Hop balls to bounce on will aid in motor development as well as focus. Sensory beads and noodles will help students face and overcome daily aversions. Developmental games and tools such as bean bags, fine motor tongs, following directions games and more will help develop and meet each individual's goals.
