I have observed that 8th grade students at my school tend to have some reading reticence. In order to help foster a love of reading, my colleague and I choose to switch up our usual first book of the year and read a novel that students can relate to and get really interested in. We chose S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders. We will use this long-loved novel to demonstrate plot line, memoir elements, and discuss themes of cultural competency, decision-making and friendship. We are excited to start the new school year off by hooking students on reading. Although some students will choose to read the book online or through an audio format, those who demonstrate an interest and commitment to completing the corresponding assignment will be gifted these books to keep. Thank you so much in advance for helping jumpstart what will hopefully be a lifelong scholarship of literature.
