My students currently sit in cramped old-fashioned desks. They are not easily grouped together and are a tight fit for some of my students. Having tables for my students will allow them to be more comfortable but more importantly allow them to collaborate to solve math problems. They are at a very social age and learn best when able to explore and problem-solve together.
Group work and cooperative learning builds skills for life.
Cooperative learning promotes development of higher-level thinking, oral communication, self-management, and leadership skills. It also aides in the promotion of student-faculty interaction, as well as, increasing student retention, self-esteem, and responsibility.
Tables provide students with seating that is more conducive to student lead learning. Tables are also beneficial to the students who are too shy or embarrassed to raise their hand during class. They are able to ask their table group when they need help. Tables provide quick fluid mobility for both changing centers and rearranging seating to fit a lesson or activity.
