I am seeking funding that allows me to convert my entire classroom into a room that allows me to use active seating and standing desks and tables for my students. I am wanting to create an environment that not only provides seating and standing options for my students during the day, but will also accommodate what their bodies need at the time of learning. Movement oriented products have been proven to improve attention and concentration, as well as posture and blood flow, which correlate to better academic success in the classroom. The honest truth is that getting sixth graders to sit still in the environment that we have currently created is unnatural. I constantly battle with students leaning in their chairs and being out of their seats or wanting to sit on the floor. Why should those seating arrangements which are natural to them not become a part of my classroom? Our bodies are not designed to sit in these hard backed chairs for 7 hours a day and focus on instruction. How can I help promote movement and learning at the same time? How can I utilize their need to be active and what I am trying to accomplish? With the use of stability balls, lowered tables, tables where students are allowed to stand and work, seating on the floor and hokki stools, students would be able to actively move and concentrate on my lessons at the same time. I already have students that choose to sit on the floor with no props or pillows or special seats at all...imagine their delight if I can provide them with a special seat or pad to sit on with a lowered table? Or those boys or girls that constantly lean..what if I can give them an option with a stability ball???
