In the science classroom, labs and activities are often fast-paced and loud. It is very easy for students who don't understand to get lost in the process. Teens are sensitive to the perceptions of their peers and often won't ask for help. The Communication Corner would be a comfortable environment for students to debrief after a difficult assignment. The environmental cues (soft floor chairs, circular rug, away from main student seating) would help the students to remember to listen to each other and feel safe to ask questions. The flexible seating in the space would be multi-functional and would add a new dimension to the classroom. In my scientific research class, I have groups of students working together to brainstorm and develop innovative solutions to problems they have identified. I think this space would facilitate that exchange of ideas and allow each member to contribute equally. I would also use this space to review content material with small groups of struggling students. In this space, they wouldn't be worried about what their peers think and would be able to shut out the typical classroom distractions. I am also excited to add this space as a reward in order to acknowledge positive student behaviors.
