Wobble stools and bounce ball chairs will help turn my classroom into an environment where students feel empowered! I currently have some options available to students outside of the traditional desk/chair option, but money is an issue. Flexible seating promotes student choice, is good for physical health, comfort, and encourages collaboration and a sense of community. Children need to move and be comfortable when learning and working. Flexible seating allows them to wobble, rock, bounce, lean or stand, which increases oxygen flow to the brain, blood flow, and core strength. In turn, this burns more calories and increases metabolism. It also helps keep young minds more alert and focused. An uncomfortable student is unproductive and off task. Giving students the choice to sit where they feel they will be most successful that day, is empowering to them. We have begun our year with flexible seating options that I have made myself or bought from garage sales and my students are loving it so far! They feel in control over their learning, are demonstrating responsibility, and proving to me they are capable of choice. If we could have more options for them, I know our focus and love of learning would increase so much more. I can't wait to see the benefits of flexible seating in my classroom and would be grateful for any help in providing this opportunity to my students.
