Children's literature, with beautiful illustrations, is the ideal way to integrate reading and art. I love to teach art with a read-aloud as the starting point. The ideas, people, and illustrations in these children's books fascinate and inspire my students. We talk about the ideas and struggles of the characters (mostly artists). We talk about the illustrations and art in the books before we make our own. Art and children's literature go hand in hand in teaching about inclusion, diversity, respect, creativity, and color - the spectrum of colors and the shades of us. These books highlight artists and writers of color. Please help me to open up my students' eyes to the beauty of the world around us, the beauty of each one of us, the beauty of art!
