For many of my years as a high school English educator, I have taught 9th-11th grade students. I teach mostly 11th graders and a class of English language learners. This year, I've taken on a class of 9th graders. I have thirty students who are curious, unsure, confident, and apprehensive, all at the same time when it comes to learning. Teaching in a semi-urban area with a demographic that experiences high levels of poverty, a lot of transience, and instability in their lives is a challenge. However, I stand strong in offering them lessons of hope, resilience, empathy, and inspiration through our readings. Equity is about access. Equity is about what Maya Angelou calls "passports to understanding." Equity is opportunity. And, equity is justice. This is why I teach and this is what I want to offer my students through the power of reading, of knowledge and of thinking independently.
