Reading instruction in first grade is critical to the success of learning to read. Kindergarten and 1st grade focus on foundational skills which every successful reader must have ownership of in order to be fluent readers. The more fluent a reader becomes, the better they can comprehend and understand what is being read. I want to create a love for reading within my students in my classroom. These leveled readers would allow my students to pick a book that interests them and read it independently with little assistance and minimal frustration. The time spent as an independent reader will provide students the opportunity to become a stronger reader, while enjoying their choice of books.
