Many of my students come from sheltered backgrounds and lack exposure to rich conversations about social justice. I'd like to share true stories about students that differ from them. We spent a lot of time learning about how cultures, traditions, and customs affect others in the world when we are ignorant of them. I want to help my students learn about how hate can spread and how we can learn from these mistakes. “Be the change that you wish to see in the world.” (Gandhi) This project would purchase copies of novels called "Wonder" and A Night Divided. Wonder focuses on acceptance of differences in people. A Night Divided focuses a young girl's story in Nazi, Germany and how a little hate can spread to a lot of hate. Our goal is to have a class set. This will help reinforce the themes of integrity and empathy that we are working on in class and school-wide​. We will use these for reading groups and book studies.
