One of the most respected bike schools in the country is located right here in Southern Oregon. The United Bike Institute (UBI) trains people in bike maintenance, repair, and building. Last year, students from 48 countries came to UBI for training. The institute offers a one week, 5 day class on basic bicycle maintenance. UBI is willing to lower their usual price to $950 for the week. The funded dollars would pay for one of our high school students to attend this class. Students that are interested would submit an application to SVA. Staff will review all applications and select one person. In return for that training, the student would return to SVA and train other students on how to maintain their bikes. We would also have times when the community could come in and learn how to tune and maintain their own bicycles. The remaining funds would be used for bicycle repair tools, stands, and supplies. A smaller portion would be used for skateboard tools and supplies. Students would learn the basics of bearing replacement and wheel replacement. The funds will be spent on a combination of training, fixed materials, and supplies. The training will be a one-week​ basic mechanics course at the United Bike Institute in Ashland. The cost has been reduced by UBI to $950. The fixed materials include bike stands, truing stands, and tools. These purchases will stay with SVA and be available for use for many years to come. Bicycle and skateboard supplies will be purchased as needed. Students will learn how to diagnose the problem, consult with others, and then how to order the needed supplies to correct the problem.
