Challenging and engaging texts for middle school students can be hard to come by. However, as an ELA teacher, when I can find a novel that can both engage and challenge the thinking of a middle school student, I will do everything in my grasp to get that novel into their hands. "The Giver", by Lois Lowry, is a text that has the ability to do both of these things. The content discussed in the book has the power to challenge students' thinking about how we interact within our own society, to question the information presented to us (hello, internet!), and allow students to engage in a higher level of classroom discourse. By helping to fund this project, you will not only be giving my students an engaging text to interactive with, but also the ability for my class to reach a higher level of thinking and discussions through the use of a common text. We will complete our novel study of this book through the use of a "Reading Workshop" model and focus on not only the idea of a "hero" but also the 5 elements of fiction, particularly in a dystopian society.
