Creating a safe, comfortable environment is essential for students to do well academically. A majority of the students I work with have unfortunate environmental factors, such as being homeless, parents suffering from mental health issues and/or addictions, and childhood traumas. My drive and passion is to help make a difference in my students lives, creating a path for them to have a successful life after high school. I have noticed that kids only need one person to believe in them and to make a difference. A safe place is needed in everyone's lives. It is unfortunate if that is not at home, but that is what I am here for. Your donation's are going to help me with my mission. The two bean bag chairs will create a relaxed environment. Studies show that there is more buy in with counseling when there is strong rapport and a comfortable environment. This will also help when students come in with a panic attack; they will be able to relax in a comfortable area. In addition, the rug will tie the room together with the bean bags, showing a warm welcoming environment. The bistro set will go outside of the counseling office by the garden that we have started. We have lunch sessions with students and instead of eating inside the office, it will be nice to sit outside in the sun to break up the school day where students are always inside. The zen garden will be placed on my center table and will help distract my students when they are facing anxiety or feeling uncomfortable, taking the pressure off of eye contact. This ties in with what the gemstone ball set will be utilized for. Both of these sensory items will also be a good icebreaker in my groups.
