The concepts of mitosis and meiosis are challenging because students cannot see these processes take place. With the chromosome kit, students will be able to manipulate pop beads to simulate mitosis and meiosis. They will actually be able to see crossing over take place. Additionally, students will see how the DNA from the chromosomes can be cut and run through a gel by using the gel electrophoresis models, without the expense of running the gel themselves. Lab activities will be created so that students can use the gels to identify the perpetrator of a crime using the models. How chromosomes work and the function of gel electrophoresis in DNA analysis are important concepts for today's biology student. But these concepts are often difficult for students to grasp. I want to make these processes visual for all of our school's biology students in order for them to better understand one of the most fundamental concepts in biology.
