Currently, my students are working at desks that are arranged in groups to promote sharing and a cooperative learning environment. The desks have unfortunately seen better days. They are all mismatched and are uneven in height, making it difficult for students to pass materials amongst one another and work cooperatively and collaboratively at center time and other times of the day. The desks also limit the number of students I can put in a group without having to rearrange the furniture in the room multiple times per day. To facilitate their group-work and make it an overall better experience for my students, I would like to exchange all of the desks in my classroom for tables. A collaborative working environment supports students in both their individual and cooperative work. The tables I have selected provide equitable space for six students to work both independently and collaboratively. The benefit of having desks is that it provides students with a clear boundary for their personal space, but the design of this table has clear boundaries so that students will still have their personal space even though they are grouped together. Having one flat and even surface will also make it easier for students to share materials and work cooperatively at center time.
