Creating an interest in informational text can be a difficult task with middle school students. During our final semester of school, my students will be reading the novel "The Book Thief" by Markus Zusak. This novel follows the main character as her German family hides a Jew in their basement. "The Book Thief" shows many sides to the Holocaust and captures students' interest almost immediately as they learn the story is told from the point of view of Death. Combining a magazine like "The Holocaust Reader" with this novel will hopefully create student interest in reading nonfiction and informational text. "The Holocaust Reader" magazine from Scholastic provides students with articles, true stories, and pictures about the horrific events that took place during the Holocaust. These articles and stories can be used throughout the unit to introduce background knowledge about specific events. This magazine can also be used to increase student comprehension of informational texts as that is a major content standard for my state.
