This project will provide books for my classroom. Tennessee is involved in a "literacy shift" where students participate in interactive read alouds with complex text sets. There are many components to incorporate. Students are engaged with interactive read alouds where the teacher guides the students understanding and comprehension of a text that is above their reading grade level. There are shared readings on the students grade level and each student should have a copy of the text in front of them. Also, guided reading is an important component. This is a time when the book is on the students reading level and they read with the teacher in small groups. Because of these needs, I have asked for some books in quantities of 6, 10, 12, etc. The lessons are challenging, and I have seen so much growth in my students. The text sets are cross curricular and the lessons provide hands-on experiences. I am able to teach foundational skills, reading skills, grammar skills, writing skills, science, and social studies using "text sets." My students gain so much worldly knowledge and are able to apply the new learning to their every day life. They are excited about reading and that makes this teacher's heart so happy! Their discussions, writings, etc. leave me speechless. The growth that my students have shown from engaging in these complex text sets and rigorous read alouds is astonishing. This project will help to provide text sets that we can use for our literacy lessons.
