Our students have become wizards at block programming using programs like Scratch, Hour of Code and Ozoblockly. I would like our students to explore coding with the programming language JavaScript. Learning a computer language can be challenging, but it is an invaluable skill to prepare students for future jobs specifically in the space industry. Students will be challenged to learn how to program the Sphero robot using the JavaScript programming language. Unlike many industrial robots, Sphero lacks external moving parts. All of its electrical and mechanical components are inside of a hard spherical shell. This allows students to focus on programming, instead of building, the robot. Students will use a block program they have previously created and convert each block command into lines of code. After practicing converting codes they will decide on a mission and then use the Sphero Edu app to write a text program to accomplish their chosen task. Sample Project Ideas include: Combine Sphero with a soundtrack. Program Sphero to perform a series of dance moves. Have the Sphero repeat the same sweat dance moves. Use Morse code or write your own alphabet using colors and blink duration. Program Sphero to play with a pet. For example, program Sphero to move randomly so that a dog or cat will chase it around the yard. Turn Sphero into a game. In the electronic game Simon, players must repeat the pattern of lights that appear on the game device. Can you replicate this game with Sphero?
