I chose a 5th grade classic set of book titles along with other selected titles, for a room (and school) devoid of a library. I teach 5th/6th grade ELA in a school with no formal library or room to host one. Each teacher provides their own set of books for classroom enrichment.
Hosting 5th grade students for a scheduled DEAR time and ELA is currently limited to the few resources that I could purchase at garage sales, thrift stores and some student donations. I would like to check books out to students who currently have no other library resource.
Additionally, books will serve students that need to experience the written word in print form. These books will serve as enhancement to the current learning curriculum and broaden the cultural and situational horizons of students who are limited in life. I have different reading levels in my classroom -- my current books do serve 2-4th grade levels adequately. However, I am sorely lacking in grade-level fiction and non-fiction resources in the classroom. I believe every child should experience print materials in addition to online experiences. Access to books from the classroom library will also help them understand the basics of checking out materials, taking care of those materials, and returning them with the full reward of checking out more!
