Adjusting to kindergarten, meeting new friends, discovering your community, learning school rules; these are all big changes for new learners. But what would it feel like if you heard your teacher reading about these topics, and none of the characters in the books looked like you or your family? Helping me provide quality literature that is culturally inclusive of the diversity in my school will make my students feel safe, accepted, and important. When students feel that the adults in their school welcome and value who they are and where they have come from, they become open to learning. Students begin to take pride in being part of their school community, and empowered that their voice matters in this world.
