Developing number sense in our students is the most important thing we can do for them as teachers. As Christina Tondevold says, "Number sense can't be taught. It's caught!" I firmly believe this too. Students need to have multiple experiences in working with early numeracy concepts and number sense relationships to develop a strong sense of number. Using tools like dot cards, ten frames, and rekenreks helps our students develop an understanding of numbers and how they work. The ETA hand2mind Daily Math Fluency Kit with Number Strings and Math Talks has all the tools (or at least most of them) to help us, as teachers, provide these experiences for our students. Using this kit in my classroom will not only support my students, but also indirectly support the students in all of the other classrooms in my building since I'm also our math coach and share as much as I can with others! These kits come equipped for different grade levels that align with the Iowa Core Standards we use in math.
