Our school has a large and diverse student body, approximately 1/3 in each major demographic group. In addition, 88% are eligible for free and reduced lunch and a sizeable portion are also English language learners. What binds them together, despite their struggles in reading which were exacerbated by COVID, is a love of graphic novels. Those students who would not pick up a chapter book or novel, feel successful when they can read a graphic novel, manga, or comic book. The illustrations provide context clues to help decipher the words, and the books feel substantial. Interest in manga (anime) has skyrocketed, and students are disappointed when they are not available. Any book which gets our students out of their phones and into book pages is a winner! I would like to have more of these types of books available to them so that they can read and succeed!
