My students work so hard and often stay in AVID for 3 years. We call ourselves an "AVID Family" because they build a community of trust, respect and a shared desire for a common goal; attending college. I want to be able to support them in any way that I can since many do not have the support at home. At our site, we recently partnered with cacolleges.edu for long term college and career planning starting in 6th grade. The website allows students to set up a profile which will carry over in to high school. Within the program, they will have options to record all information that meet the California Colleges entrance requirements; courses, grades, community service/clubs, awards, service learning, goal setting, financial aid, A-G courses and so much more. We have seen a huge increase in seniors, especially those that have been in AVID for numerous years, continuing on to a four year college. At Chavez, we share Chromebook carts and they are often taken by other teachers. Many students do not have computers at home due to varying circumstances at home. The addition of 2 in my classroom (I hope to build on that) would allow the AVID students time to input pertinent information for their profile. They would also have access to check grades, missing assignments etc., so they stay on top of their academics. The Chromebooks would also aid in college and career exploration which is key in the AVID class. It is my goal to integrate more technology in the AVID elective classes, and without the means to do so, it has become a huge struggle.
