My 10th graders live in New Orleans East, a community devastated by Hurricane Katrina. Over 90% of my students receive free or reduced lunch, and nearly all live in poverty. Many live in communities plagued by violence. Our school is labeled as "academically unacceptable," and most students enter 9th grade on a 4th to 7th grade reading level. My students are resilient. They have faced more challenges and tragedy in their 15 years than most people face in their lives. They have attended failing schools since kindergarten. And yet, in the face of all this adversity, they come to school, work hard, and want to learn. They stay positive, and they are willing to do anything asked of them. Too often, we don't ask enough of them. I want my students to read the "The Kite Runner" because it is an engaging, grade-appropriate text that I know they will understand and relate to, and yet that will still challenge and push them to improve as a readers.
