Throughout the school year, my students learn about a variety of topics related to plants and animals including how people rely on plants and animals for food, what plants need to survive, how to plant seeds, bulbs and seedlings in our school garden, and which animals help plants to grow. This experience would not only be educational and support what they learn in class, but also a way to encourage students to honor and preserve their connection with nature. My purpose is not only to educate them on the Next Generation Science Standards which involve Structures and Processes, Earth's Systems and Earth and Human Activity, but to also encourage them to be life long learners of the world around them. The gardens provide an exceptional learning experience. Each trail within the garden is rich with botanical samplings of Mediterranean climate plants and offers countless opportunities for exploring natural wonders. Knowledgeable docents lead the students through the gardens and use hands on activities to teach and support the material. In the past, my students have explored the gardens with an emphasis on our five senses; touching, tasting, smelling plants and plant products. Docents let students use magnifying glasses to more closely explore plants, which of course the students love! The tours are very engaging, hands on and educational. I believe that this experience would be a memorable one for my students. Without this opportunity, most of them would never experience or visit this location which is right in our own county. My hope is that they will desire to share the experience with their families and visit the gardens again.
