Our current curriculum is very focused on reading and writing. We feel that our students need these skills to be successful in all areas of school, but they are currently lacking in knowledge of basic scientific explory. They are most engaged in projects that connect reading and writing with something that is hands on and interesting to them - animals are always a favorite! We chose raising butterflies to show students the growth and development of animal life. In addition, we want to teach them responsibility through consistently following through with jobs involved in taking care of the larvae and hope to give them a strong sense of accomplishment by seeing the project through. Finally this project will incorporate reading and writing into the science lesson, through using writing journals to track the changes and development throughout the experience and to practice making art projects to showcase their findings in the experiment in a creative way.
