Many of the texts will be used as teacher read alouds, which is where I will model habits of good readers and then I model my thinking out loud. My read alouds become special treasures that all of the students want to get their hands on. I plan to use the colored caddies on each table for sticky notes, (used for stopping and jotting their thoughts) as well as dictionary resources. As an adult, 95% of the text we read on a daily basis is non-fiction, so it is crucial that students know how to successfully read these types of texts. I chose many nonfiction titles from the "I Wonder Why" series so that I can engage students in learning and loving how to read non-fiction texts.
