While second grade might seem like a young age, there is a wide spectrum of reading abilities within the grade level. The readers in second grade range anywhere from phonics and decoding, to simple chapter books (with the occasional high-level reader who devours Harry Potter books on a bi-weekly basis). Throw into the mix the fact that the neighborhood hosts a wide variety of cultures and languages, and it is difficult to find books that speak to all of the children (and their different reading levels) within my classroom. In a school where quite often, the parent scrawls a quick note on the nightly reading log that reads, “So-and-so has no books at home to read, sorry”, I am hoping to provide ample and relevant reading materials within my class, to provide the kids with as many opportunities as possible to interact with high-quality, engaging texts within their wide range of reading levels. I am hoping to fill my library with books that speak to a variety of reading levels, socio-economic backgrounds, and cultures.
