I teach an integrated English and History course that is unique to my district. My students are gifted and read well above their grade level, and as a result, I am looking for ways to incorporate historical fiction into my classroom. The novel, Jefferson's Sons, would connect to many Social Studies standards and ELA standards. This book covers a controversial topic, Thomas Jefferson's relationship with Sally Hemings, in a way that makes history come alive for students and makes the subject more relevant. This novel will make for lively Reading Circles, as students will be able to make connections to what we've learned about the people and events from that time period and provide them with an authentic learning experience.
